Alvin Ailey is one of the most important choreographers in the history of modern dance. In 1958, at just 27 years old, he founded the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Ailey’s vision was of Black bodies unshackled and overflowing with feeling: Confidence…sorrow…joy…pride…beauty…possibility. Strength, precision, and passion remain the hallmarks of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater more than 67 years after its inception. The company’s legendary dancers return to Kansas City with vibrant programs of new and classic works that showcase and synthesize a dazzling range of cultural influences, from spirituals and church hymns, jazz, R&B, and hip-hop, to African dance and classical ballet. Ailey’s monumental Revelations serves as a beacon through it all, and as former company dancer and keeper of the Ailey flame Sylvia Waters observes, “It’s a testament to Alvin’s understanding of humanity and the human spirit. That, yes, people experience despair, struggle, repression, oppression, but they have the resilience and strength to go forward.” The company’s current season celebrates the life and legacy of Artistic Director Emerita Judith Jamison, who passed away on November 9, 2024. The company has a special place in our hearts too, as Series co-founder Richard Harriman brought the dance company to Kansas City in 1968 during their first tour and was a long-time friends of Alvin Ailey.

In this thrilling 90-minute show, Dr. Bonn reveals the insatiable, psychological hungers that drive the likes of Ted Bundy and Jeffrey Dahmer to kill repeatedly with impunity and no remorse. Bonn explains why the majority of serial killers are either psychopaths or sociopaths, how the two differ, and he reveals that every serial killer is compelled to murder by a unique fantasy need. He also explains how/why serial killers are able to successfully avoid apprehension, blend into a crowd, and become invisible. Bonn is a best-selling author, professor, public speaker, and has interacted with such notorious serial killers as Dennis Rader (“Bind, Torture Kill”) and David Berkowitz (“Son of Sam”). He shares shocking tales from his actual experiences with these killers. He also developed a profile of the unknown “Long Island Serial Killer” in 2011 that matches the alleged perpetrator, Rex Heuermann, perfectly. He shares the secrets of how he was able to predict the psychological and behavioral makeup of the Long Island Serial Killer with such incredible precision years before his capture.

Born in the ancient city of Fes, Morocco, internationally acclaimed singer Lamiae Naki and her ensemble, Seffarine, channel their deep knowledge of the music of both sides of the Straits of Gibraltar, the crossroad where African, Middle Eastern, and European cultures meet. From the 9th to 15th centuries, these cultures coexisted peacefully, producing a seminal musical alchemy that influenced the foundations of both classical Arabic and European Renaissance music. In the 21st Century, Seffarine embraces and extends the rich legacy of this golden age of tolerance and exchange between Muslim, Jewish, and Christian cultures by creating fresh, innovative works reconnecting these shared Mediterranean roots. For Cyrille Aimée, music is a way of life as much as an art form, setting her free to pursue her creative talents wherever the promptings of her diverse heritage take her. She has developed a remarkable multi-award winning, continent-spanning career as a singer, songwriter, lyricist, and educator, while always remaining true to her roots. She grew up in a multilingual household full of music where dancing was an everyday activity, sound tracked by the Afro-Caribbean rhythms of the bachata and merengue from her mother’s native Dominican Republic. The family home was in Samois-sur-Seine, the location of the Django Reinhardt Festival, one of the biggest annual gatherings of gypsy musicians in Europe. The teenage Cyrille would climb out of her bedroom window at night to mingle with the players, igniting a passion for jazz, and inspiring her with the idea of living within a global community of music, united in creativity and spontaneity, without limits or borders. By the time Cyrille was 20, she had already lived on four different continents. A spell in Santo Domingo was followed by a move to New York City, attending SUNY Purchase by day and moonlighting as a singer in the Manhattan jazz clubs by night. JigJam is born when virtuoso Irish playing jumps the pond and runs naked through the wide-open fields of bluegrass/Americana. Bluegrass and American folk music originated from the group’s home, and now JigJam is here to take it back! JigJam made its Grand Ole Opry debut in March 2023 to critical acclaim, receiving a standing ovation from a sold-out crowd on Country Music’s biggest stage. The group was joined by Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood, Steve Earle, Lauren Alaina, and many more. This Offaly- and Tipperary-born band has started the first wave of attack in the new Irish invasion of Americana. Foot stomping, high-energy badassery is what you’re in for when you see this musical powerhouse live in concert. Founding members from Offaly Jamie McKeogh (lead singer and guitar) and Daithi Melia (five-string banjo and dobro) were joined by Tipperary-born Gavin Strappe (mandolin and tenor banjo) in 2016. They are joined by Kevin Buckley (fiddle) to make up this iGrass (Irish bluegrass) quartet. Bluegrass has its roots in Irish music and Irish immigration. iGrass and JigJam is what happens when the Irish find their prodigal son.
