Who are the Hot Sardines?
The Hot Sardines are an American jazz band formed in New York City in 2007 by artistic director, singer and writer Elizabeth Bougerol and artistic director, actor and pianist Evan Palazzo. Although hailed as “the charismatic front-runners of vintage jazz,” the Sardines paradoxically emphasize both authenticity and irreverence in their performances. According to Palazzo, the Sardines do not treat jazz music “with kid gloves, or place it on a pedestal to preserve and adore” and instead play “as if these songs were written this morning, for today’s generation.” Over time, the Sardines have assembled a unique repertoire with “a sound and a style that are distinctly their own.” Their distinctive style has been described by music critics as “wartime Paris by way of New Orleans” while firmly rooted in the “here and now.”
The Hot Sardines will be touring on their newest album, Welcome Home, Bon Voyage, when they perform at the Folly Theater!
What is the Folly Frolic?
The Folly Frolic was a fundraiser concept from 1982 that included a concert with a ball drop on New Year’s Eve. This concept was re-ignited in 2015 as a benefit concert in December with the Celtic Tenors. Since then, the Folly has held an annual winter fundraiser dubbed, The Folly Frolic, with varying artists and continual success. The Folly Frolic, by the completion of its fifth year, will have raised over $500,000 for Kansas City’s most historic theater.
Folly Frolic is now in a landmark 5th year with amazing individuals & organizations supporting it including our Honorary Chairs, David Epstein & Wade Tajerian of Tom’s Town (which will be providing the bar for the entire evening! Yay!), Lockton Insurance Companies, Stinson, Theater League, Mark Seely & Ross Haynes, and so many more!
While this is a benefit concert, we encourage everyone to purchase a ticket! You don’t have to be a sponsor to enjoy the show with tickets starting as low as $30!
