The Coterie opens its 2024/2025 Season of live theatre for young people and families with the world premiere of Horse Power: Tom Bass’ American Story.
Co-produced in partnership with the American Royal and What if Puppets, Horse Power tells the inspiring story of Tom Bass, a Missourian born in slavery, who became the greatest horseman of his time. Internationally known for being a horse whisperer, among his many accolades, Tom started the American Royal’s first horse show. In contemporary times, Natalia (“Nate”) Edmonds loves horses, especially the one her parents bought her for her birthday. As a Black teenager, she learns about and is inspired by the legacy of Tom Bass as she grapples with what modern day racism looks like.
Horse Power is written by Michelle Tyrene Johnson, the award-winning playwright behind The Coterie’s Only One Day a Year, and is produced as part of the American Royal’s 125th Anniversary. Directed by Teresa Leggard, the cast features Amari Lewis, Joe Serrano, Ann Pittman Zárate, L. Roi Hawkins, Paulette Dawn, Terrace Wyatt, Jr., and Erik J Pratt.
Performed live on The Coterie’s mainstage in Crown Center for families with ages 9 and older through October 6, 2024. Tickets are $13.00 for youth and seniors & $17.00 for adults. Visit www.thecoterie.org.
