The spellbinding Gabriela Montero brings a program shaped by the many voices of Spain: from the courtly sonatas of Soler and Scarlatti to the poetic nationalism of Granados, Albéniz, Mompou, and Alicia de Larrocha, and finally to the Spanish-inspired worlds of Chopin and Liszt. Venezuelan-born and internationally celebrated as both a pianist and an improviser, Montero has earned praise from The New York Times for her “brilliant, wonderfully imaginative performances.” This program traces the evolution of Spanish-influenced piano music across two centuries, encompassing clarity, elegance, color, dance, rhythm, and virtuoso display — the many shades of Spain.
Gabriela Montero’s visionary interpretations and unique compositional gifts have garnered her critical acclaim and a devoted following on the world stage. Anthony Tommasini remarked in The New York Times that “Montero’s playing had everything: crackling rhythmic brio, subtle shadings, steely power…soulful lyricism…unsentimental expressivity.”
