Evgeny Kissin, piano; Joshua Bell, violin; Steven Isserlis, cello
Presented by Harriman-Jewell Series at The Folly Theater Kansas City, MO
Three of the world’s most celebrated musicians perform three powerful, idiosyncratic piano trios. The first half of the program is steeped in Jewish music and memory, pairing Rosowsky’s rarely performed Fantastic Dance on Hebrew Themes for Piano Trio with Shostakovich’s devastating Piano Trio No. 2, a searing expression of both intense personal grief and freshly discovered horrors perpetrated during World War II. Tchaikovsky’s immense, sole Piano Trio follows. A wide-ranging and folk-infused musical elegy, it is a notable predecessor to Shostakovich’s trio, and yet it remains one-of-a-kind in its fascinating, masterful construction. Pianist Evgeny Kissin is one of the world’s most in-demand musicians, a master of his craft with an especially storied career spanning 5 decades. Kissin’s musicality, the depth and poetic quality of his interpretations, and his extraordinary virtuosity have earned him the veneration and admiration deserved only by one of the most gifted classical pianists of his generation and, arguably, generations past. With a career spanning almost four decades, GRAMMY® Award-winning violinist Joshua Bell is one of the most celebrated artists of his era. Bell has performed with virtually every major orchestra in the world, and continues to maintain engagements as a soloist, recitalist, chamber musician, conductor and as the Music Director of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields. Acclaimed worldwide for his profound musicianship and technical mastery, British cellist Steven Isserlis enjoys a unique and distinguished career as a soloist, chamber musician, educator, author and broadcaster. As a concert soloist, he appears regularly with the…
