We end our season with a powerful adaptation of Steinbeck's classic novella by the father of American opera, Carlisle Floyd. Of Mice and Men delves deep into the American psyche and experience of the 1930s and brings to life the unbreakable bond between George and Lennie, migrant farm workers, striving for the American Dream. Directed by Kristine McIntyre, our production uses projections to immerse the audience in Lennie's perspective, blending intimate humanity with cinematic scope in a gripping, tragic journey. This brand-new production is co-produced by Lyric Opera of Kansas City, Houston Grand Opera, Florida State University, and Des Moines Metro Opera. Lilly is a ten-year-old worrywart. To keep her concerns at bay, she diligently and fervently lists them in a worry book. Her globe-trotting scientist-parents don’t worry about anything. When they learn of a rare sighting of the frangipani fruit fly, they set sail for the fabled Shipwreck Islands. Since water is her greatest fear, Lilly stays behind with her eccentric, librarian great-uncle. Then news comes that the scientists are shipwrecked, and Lilly must overcome her fear of the sea, find the hidden island, and outsmart a bunch of treasure-hungry pirates to save her parents.

Anu Tali, guest conductor Chaeyoung Park, piano EDUARD TUBIN Estonian Dance Suite EDVARD GRIEG Piano Concerto JEAN SIBELIUS Symphony No. 1 Estonian conductor Anu Tali leads your Kansas City Symphony in a vibrant program of music that evokes northern landscapes. The concert begins with a dance suite by Eduard Tubin, an Estonian composer who spent much of his life in Sweden. Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg’s Piano Concerto is one of the genre’s best-loved works and has one of the most dramatic openings of any piano concerto. The capstone of the performance is Finnish composer Jean Sibelius’s First Symphony. It was modeled after the famous “Pathétique” Symphony by Tchaikovsky, yet bears the original stamp of Sibelius, who was to become one of the greatest symphonic composers of the 20th century.

Join us in the beautiful Kauffman Center Brandmeyer Great Hall lobby for a drink after work starting at 5:00 p.m., then attend a short and casual concert starting at 6:00 p.m. May we have this dance? The elegance and grace of Baroque music is on display in this concert featuring music of the 17th and early 18th centuries. Stonelion Puppet Theatre presents '1,000 Cranes and the Tree of Wishes'

Imagine a world...just imagine. “I am Root, the beginning of every story, but you, you are the middle and together we can find the end.” So says The Keeper of the Tree of Wishes. Journey along the “root” system with StoneLion Puppet Theatre as their intricate puppets bring to life real wishes gathered in our community and across the world. This choose-your-own adventure, featuring intricate puppets, invites each audience to pick which cranes to let fly from the Tree of Wishes. No single performance will be the same; funny, touching, poignant and completely unique. Wishes could be: What would happen if unicorns were real? What good is the smallest of us? What if your shoes could talk? What if the world was at peace? At each performance, the audience will be shown how to make their hands into cranes to fly as the wishes are brought to life in interactive fun and to reinforce the idea that our actions can actually make a difference, especially as part of a community. Audience members are encouraged to leave their wish for the world to be added to the show. Written by Heather Nisbett-Loewenstein. A collaboration with Dr. Ha Houng of Hong Duc University Thahn Hoa Vietnam and literally hundreds of children from Vietnam to Kansas City, Kenya to Overland Park, from Iceland to Leavenworth, and along so many more lines of longitude and latitude.

Accompanied by guest vocalists and musicians, audiences will hear new and innovative orchestrations of Dolly’s hit songs, including “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors” and “I Will Always Love You,” plus her own personal favorites. Dolly says, “The threads of my life are woven together through my songs. That’s why this project, "Threads: My Songs In Symphony," is so special to me.
