The legendary Blind Boys of Alabama bring their transcendent harmonies and spiritual power to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Stevie Wonder's iconic album “Songs in the Key of Life,” featuring classics like “Sir Duke,” “I Wish,” and more. This special presentation pairs many of Stevie Wonder’s classic songs with beloved selections from the Blind Boys’ own celebrated repertoire, blending gospel, soul, and Americana in a joyful performance that honors both musical legacies. With over 75 years of lifting spirits and moving souls, the Blind Boys continue their mission of spreading light and love through the universal language of music. In 2003, the Blind Boys earned a Grammy Award for an album that included their acclaimed cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Higher Ground,” a version later featured in film and television, including FX’s Fargo. In 2007, Stevie Wonder presented Blind Boys singer Jimmy Carter with a Vision Award for Lifetime Achievement, underscoring their enduring impact on music and culture.

His talents as a singer and violist allowed him to enter the service of the Gonzaga court in Mantua, where he remained for more than twenty years. With this fertile environment and multiple influences, both musical and literary, Monteverdi innovated masterfully, producing modern music that made him one of the most renowned composers of his time. This program, devoted to madrigals for mixed voices, offers a selection of Monteverdi’s finest works. It explores the madrigal in a variety of styles, from the purest polyphonic style to pieces rich in dissonances, through more elaborate works of a dancing nature. The program culminates in a performance of the famous Il Combattimento (The Combat of Tancred and Clorinda). Experience Johannes Brahms’ magnum opus with Music Director Matthias Pintscher and the Kansas City Symphony Chorus. The great German composer was deeply moved by the death of his mother and composed what he almost called “A Human Requiem.” Taking German texts from the Luther Bible instead of the Latin text of the Requiem Mass, he created a humanist work focused not on the soul of the departed but on the living. The program also includes Arnold Schoenberg’s A Survivor from Warsaw, a memorial to victims of the Holocaust that defies evil with a powerful expression of faith. Seamlessly merging hits from rock and oldies to Americana, pop, and country, the genre-smashing, vocal/instrumental trio with backup band, TAKE3, lives at the intersection where art and pop culture collide. For this performance, the trio will be joined by guest musicians on guitar and drums. Described by audience goers as a mini–Trans Siberian Orchestra experience, TAKE3 is nothing short of exhilarating. They have electrified audiences at over 600 venues across the U.S. and abroad, including performing arts centers, festivals, and symphony halls. Their unmistakable style and infectious joy in music-making brings them to over 50 stops each season, including the Lied Center in Nebraska, Bankhead Theater in California, Alberta Bair in Montana, the Indianapolis Violin Competition Laureate series, as well as 54 Below and Rockwood Music hall in New York, and the Vibrato Grill in LA. Featuring a blend of original holiday compositions, wintry covers, and reworked classics woven together with holiday stories and memories, Ryan David Green and Cameron Hood invite audiences to experience the joy, depth, intimacy, and excitement of the holiday season. Named “Best Group/Duo” at the International Acoustic Music Awards, acoustic duo Ryanhood got their first break as street performers at Boston’s Quincy Market. Almost everyone is familiar with the traditional version of the holiday story, “The Nutcracker.” Far fewer are aware of the original and notably darker inspiration for this beloved ballet—E.T.A. Hoffman’s 1816 story, “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King.” Owen/Cox Dance Group brings their highly unique, contemporary jazz adaptation of “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” back to the Yardley Hall stage this holiday season! About Owen/Cox Dance Group Owen/Cox Dance Group's mission is to create new music and dance collaborations, present high-quality contemporary dance performances with live music, and to engage as wide an audience as possible through affordable live performance, education, and outreach programs. With this mission in mind, founders Jennifer Owen and Brad Cox bring together some of Kansas City's most talented artists, representing a variety of genres, to perform contemporary dance with live music. With diverse backgrounds ranging from the Bolshoi Ballet and the Leningrad Chamber Orchestra to Alvin Ailey and Dave Brubeck, these dancers and musicians form a highly skilled and multifaceted corps. The collaborative results speak for themselves: Fresh and vibrant new works that are classical in form, but contemporary in expression.
