Join the Midwest Trust Center and Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art for the 2022 Light Up the Lawn Concert Series featuring some of the best live music Kansas City has to offer. Bring your blankets, lawn chairs and picnic baskets (no alcohol) for these fun events! No reservations required. The concerts will start at 8:30 on the Nerman Museum lawn at Johnson County Community College.

On August 19 Calvin Arsenia will kick off the summer series with his angelic voice and undeniable charisma. Arsenia has built a reputation for turning the arts world on its head. While the harp has allowed this Kansas City native to become a man of the world (gaining followings in Paris, Edinburgh, and at the Outlyre Harpist Festival in Austria), it’s his unique ability to craft a stimulating setting at his live shows that has all eyes fixed on this conspicuous musician and his breathtaking approach to harp music.
Making Movies will take the stage on August 26. The band has been making waves with an original sound Rolling Stone describes as “an eclectic blend of rumbero percussions, delicate organs and grungy fuzz rock.” Over the course of their career, the quartet has turned heads as a newcomer on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts, a voice for immigrant rights and as a co-writer alongside salsa icon Rubén Blades. Their latest record, XOPA, is available now and features explosive riffs, urgent lyrics and rumbero rhythms that highlight the Making Movies sound. The August 26 concert will include a special appearance by members of the JCCC jazz band as they perform a song with Making Movies.
Closing out the series on September 2 will be Victor and Penny and their Loose Change Orchestra. They will deliver swing-infused folk-jazz in the band’s signature high-energy style with joy, humor and soaring musical improvisation. They impress and delight with charm and hot licks and they are an “absolute rollicking blast.” Their latest album, Electricity, joyfully captures the energy, humor and soaring musical improvisation of their live shows.
