Rent
Presented by The White Theatre at The White Theatre Leawood, KS
2025-2026 Theatre Series Co-produced with KC Melting Pot Theatre Set in the East Village of New York City, "Rent" is about falling in love, finding your voice, and living for today. Winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, "Rent" has become a pop cultural phenomenon with songs that rock and a story that resonates with audiences of all ages. Based loosely on Puccini's La Boheme, Jonathan Larson's "Rent" follows a year in the life of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York's Lower East Side, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. The physical and emotional complications of the disease pervade the lives of Roger, Mimi, Tom, and Angel. Maureen deals with her chronic infidelity through performance art; her partner, Joanne, wonders if their relationship is worth the trouble. Benny has sold out his Bohemian ideals in exchange for a hefty income and is on the outs with his former friends. Mark, an aspiring filmmaker, feels like an outsider to life in general. How these young bohemians negotiate their dreams, loves and conflicts provides the narrative thread to this groundbreaking musical. The Westerlies
Presented by Midwest Trust Center at Johnson County Community College at Midwest Trust Center at Johnson County Community College Overland Park, KS
The self-described “accidental brass quartet” takes its name from the prevailing winds that travel from west to east. “Skilled interpreters who are also adept improvisers” (NPR’s “Fresh Air”), The Westerlies explore jazz, roots, and chamber music influences to create the rarest of hybrids: music that is both "folk-like and composerly, lovely, and intellectually rigorous.” (NPR Music). Since their inception, the ensemble has produced 10 critically acclaimed albums of genre-defying music. 2023 saw the release of their fifth studio album, entitled “Move,” featuring music of new music icons Caroline Shaw and Nico Muhly, on the ensemble’s in-house record label. Sought-after collaborators, The Westerlies are featured on recordings by Fleet Foxes, Big Red Machine, Common, Theo Bleckmann, Aoife O’Donovan, and Conrad Tao. Their work with Tao recently led to the commission of “Concerto for Westerlies,” an expansive and ebullient concerto for brass quartet that premiered in 2023 with the Orlando Philharmonic under the direction of Eric Jacobsen.

Ranky Tanky (a Gullah phrase for “get funky”) are five lifelong friends from Charleston, South Carolina, who have established themselves as passionate global ambassadors for their local culture and community. Through their performance, they are helping to faithfully preserve the traditions originated by African Americans in the coastal South during slavery kept alive through the present day. Ranky Tanky have achieved many firsts for South Carolina’s West African-rooted Gullah community since their formation, earning yet another milestone at the 2019 Grammy Awards by taking home the Best Regional Roots Album prize for their sophomore release, “Good Time.” The album, which also hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz Chart, combines songs carried down through generations in the Sea Islands of the Southeastern United States with the band’s own original compositions in the Gullah tradition. In Ranky Tanky's hands, this style of music has been described as "soulful honey to the ears" (NPR). The band has been featured on NPR's “Fresh Air,” “The Today Show,” “PBS Newshour,” and “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’s” “#playathome.” Ranky Tanky was honored to be featured artists in President Biden’s inauguration event, “We The People.” They were the subjects of a 10-page profile in Oxford American’s “South Carolina Music” issue and were named 2020 Artist of The Year by the Charleston City Paper.

'Tango After Dark'
Presented by Midwest Trust Center at Johnson County Community College at Midwest Trust Center at Johnson County Community College Overland Park, KS

The show takes this passionate dancing language to the limit, creating a unique and exhilarating performance. This outstanding theatrical experience is entirely inspired by the great work of Astor Piazzolla, a prominent Argentinean contemporary music figure. Starting in the 1960s, Piazzolla’s figure became the core of avant-garde thought, whose three-decade leading transformation took the “New Tango” to the most prestigious stages in the world. This worldwide renowned composer transformed the tango landscape in the 1960s and 70s by introducing the world to his Nuevo Tango.

Star Wars: The Story in Music - Boston Pops on Tour with Keith Lockhart, Conductor
Presented by Harriman-Jewell Series at Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts Kansas City, MO
Take an intergalactic musical journey with Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops! This interstellar concert experience will awaken the Force within you and transport you to a galaxy far, far away! In 2025, the Boston Pops will enter its 140th season of entertaining audiences in Boston and beyond. Boston Pops Conductor Keith Lockhart will mark his 30th year at the helm of the orchestra. It all began in 1885, thanks to the vision of Civil War veteran Henry Lee Higginson. Four years earlier, in 1881, he founded the Boston Symphony Orchestra, calling its establishment “the dream of my life.” From the start, he intended to present, in the warmer months, concerts of light classics and the popular music of the day. From a practical perspective, Higginson realized that these “lighter” performances would provide year-round employment for his musicians. The “Promenade Concerts,” as they were originally called, were soon informally known as “Popular Concerts,” which eventually became shortened to “Pops,” the name officially adopted in 1900. The following year the orchestra performed for the first time at its new home, Symphony Hall. Not only is this performance space acoustically outstanding, it was also designed, at Higginson’s insistence, so that the rows of seats for Boston Symphony concerts could be replaced by tables…
